Australia is now living with COVID-19, but in aged care, thousands are dying with it:
Early in the pandemic, the prevalence of COVID-19 in aged care was seen as a national tragedy. But two years on, the number of deaths has jumped exponentially โ€” and some worry we've started looking the other way.

They're known as the Silent Generation: Australia's elders often have a reputation for copping hard knocks on the chin without complaint โ€“ but theyโ€™re also among our most vulnerable.

ยท While the COVID death rate in aged care has significantly decreased in 2022, the number of total deaths has increased exponentially
ยท Advocates say not enough people are aware of the trauma still happening in aged care
ยท Residents are torn between fearing the outside world and wanting to be a part of it

It's because of that vulnerability many of their lives have been slower to return to a pre-COVID 'normal'. 0 deaths recorded during the same time frame.

Advance Care Planning - Why are the numbers so low and how can we fix it?
The prevalence of advance care planning in primary care is vastly lower than in aged care and acute hospitals, signaling a major policy challenge for enabling palliative care in the home.

A 2021 multicentre audit by Advance Care Planning Australia examined the prevalence of advance care directives (a legal record of a personโ€™s preferences for care and treatment), or documented advance care plans found that only approximately 30 per cent of older people had an advance care document.
