Intermountain Healthcare takes Utah medication delivery to the skies with Zipline drones
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter
-
Intermountain Healthcare has launched a drone delivery service for its patients in the Salt Lake Valley through a partnership with Zipline.

The provider will transport prescriptions and over-the-counter medications to patients’ homes via Zipline’s electric, autonomous aircrafts, eventually servicing more than one million patients.

It will be the first health system west of the Mississippi to use Zipline, and will start off by delivering to communities within a few miles of the Zipline distribution center in the Salt Lake and Utah counties.

Mayo Clinic first in North America to install Siemens Biograph Vision Quadra PET/CT system
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter
-
Mayo Clinic will be the first North American provider to perform scans on patients with Siemens Healthineers’ Biograph Vision Quadra PET/CT scanner.

Recently installed at its Rochester location, the 106-centimeter-long PET/CT is capable of imaging a patient from the top of their head to their legs simultaneously, at reduced radiation exposures, and has ultrafast timing resolution that makes it the most sensitive PET/CT on the market for clinical use.

Scans with the system are scheduled to begin later this year, with Mayo Clinic expecting it to dramatically increase quality and speed of clinical PET/CT, especially for the diagnosis, staging and treatment of cancer.

Pain relief without opioids' ill effects? Researchers find new molecules
By Helen Floersh
-
The over-prescription of addictive opioid pain medications has led to untold suffering on account of widespread abuse. Still, the drugs are effective in patients with cancer or who are recovering from surgery, creating a need for a viable alternative or adjunct treatment to reduce reliance on opioids for pain relief.

Now, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) scientists funded by a DARPA grant have identified a new set of non-opioid molecules that ease pain without sedation, according to a study published Sept. 30 in Science. Their hope is that the drugs can be used alongside opioids, lowering the dose needed for relief.

“If we can create a drug that works in combination with a much lower dose of opiate, that would be the dream,” Allan Basbaum, Ph.D., co-author and UCSF anatomy chair, said in a press release.

Amyloid PET scans can rule out Alzheimer's, inform long-term care planning
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter |
-
Amyloid PET scans can accurately diagnose or rule out Alzheimer’s disease in veterans with memory loss and may be useful for managing their long-term clinical care.

That’s what researchers in the Memory Disorders Clinic at the VA Boston Healthcare System found in two studies on the scans, which are minimally invasive diagnostic procedures for measuring amyloid, a naturally occurring protein in and common biomarker of the disease.

The clinic is one of the few VA programs where this type of imaging is conducted, with others and private sector facilities not typically performing it, because of insurers and Medicare not reimbursing for it, despite being FDA-approved.

Hospital prices have spiked 31% nationally since 2015: report
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter
-
Hospital expenses make up nearly one third of U.S. healthcare spending, with prices skyrocketing as much as 31% nationally since 2015.

This increase has been four times faster than growth in workers’ wages and reflects how providers have become large corporate entities focused on building up their revenue streams, instead of caring for patients, say the authors of a new paper by Families USA, a nonprofit, nonpartisan consumer health advocacy organization.

Australia is now living with COVID-19, but in aged care, thousands are dying with it:
Early in the pandemic, the prevalence of COVID-19 in aged care was seen as a national tragedy. But two years on, the number of deaths has jumped exponentially — and some worry we've started looking the other way.

They're known as the Silent Generation: Australia's elders often have a reputation for copping hard knocks on the chin without complaint – but they’re also among our most vulnerable.

Key points:
· While the COVID death rate in aged care has significantly decreased in 2022, the number of total deaths has increased exponentially
· Advocates say not enough people are aware of the trauma still happening in aged care
· Residents are torn between fearing the outside world and wanting to be a part of it

It's because of that vulnerability many of their lives have been slower to return to a pre-COVID 'normal'. 0 deaths recorded during the same time frame.

Too many women in the US are skipping, or not thinking about, mammograms
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter
-
More than one fifth of women between 35 and 44 say they have never received a mammogram and have no plans of getting one.

Breast cancer kills about 42,000 American women each year, yet only 43% know their family history of the disease and 32%, their own individual risk factors, according to researchers at Orlando Health.

In a national survey commissioned by the university, 22% of women said they did not plan on getting a mammogram and have not had one prior. The researchers say decisions like this put women at greater risk of being diagnosed with an advanced form of the disease.

Rethink Healthcare acquires six micro-hospitals in Texas
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter
--
Rethink Healthcare Real Estate has acquired six micro-hospitals under Baylor Scott & White Health in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex area of Texas.

Containing an average of eight to 10 short stay beds, micro-hospitals are small inpatient facilities that provide simple acute and emergency services often performed in big hospitals.

An alternative to long waiting lists in large hospitals, they are located in underserved areas that lack the resources to support a full-service facility, according to Emerus, which operates 20 across the U.S., including the six Baylor Scott & White Health facilities.

Photon-counting detectors advance CT technology
By Kaitlyn Wilkie
-
Improving image quality and dose efficiency have always been top priorities in the development of new imaging systems to improve diagnostics and patient care. Photon-counting detectors (PCDs) are the newest major advancement for CT systems. These detectors have already been used for several years in nuclear imaging.

In September 2021, Siemens Healthineers received FDA approval for the NAEOTOM Alpha, the first photon-counting CT system cleared for the U.S. market. Neurologica received FDA approval for its photon-counting CT system, the OmniTom Elite with PCD, in March 2022. What makes these systems unique among other CT systems on the market is the PCD, which allows for spectral imaging. Conventional CT systems use third-generation digital radiography (DR) detectors. The PCD’s advantages are its ability to provide increased spatial resolution, decrease electronic noise, and reduce radiation exposure compared to DR detectors.

Data from French hospital that refused to pay ransom leaked to dark web
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter
-
Hackers who infiltrated and stole data from a French hospital in August have now released personal patient records on the dark web in response to the institution’s refusal to pay the group’s $1 million ransom.

The 1,000-bed Centre Hospitalier Sud Francilien (CHSF) in Corbeil-Essonnes, near Paris, shut down its emergency services and transferred many patients to other hospital facilities after finding that the Lockbit ransomware group stole social security numbers, medical scans, lab reports and other health data via a ransomware strain known as Lockbit 3.0.

Advance Care Planning - Why are the numbers so low and how can we fix it?
The prevalence of advance care planning in primary care is vastly lower than in aged care and acute hospitals, signaling a major policy challenge for enabling palliative care in the home.

A 2021 multicentre audit by Advance Care Planning Australia examined the prevalence of advance care directives (a legal record of a person’s preferences for care and treatment), or documented advance care plans found that only approximately 30 per cent of older people had an advance care document.

Pursuing lower costs and greater access to proton therapy
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter
-
In the next two years, UW Health, the health system associated with the University of Wisconsin, will be the first medical institution worldwide to clinically treat cancer patients sitting upright with proton therapy, using the Marie particle therapy system. Designed by Leo Cancer Care, the solution utilizes a rotating chair to allow the patient to sit in front of the proton beam, instead of lying down, creating a more comfortable body stance.

This naturally positions the heart, lungs, and other organs to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure, while allowing for more precise targeting of tumors. It also creates direct eye-to-eye contact between the patient and care team. Additionally, the scanner requires less space to install and reduces total cost of ownership, compared to other proton therapy systems.

Geographic cancer screening disparities in US linked to county vulnerability scores
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter
-
Residents living in U.S. counties deemed more vulnerable than others were less likely to receive timely screenings for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer.

Socioeconomic status and racial and ethnic minority status, along with other factors, determine a county’s social vulnerability index (SVI), which uses census data to determine how vulnerable a county or regional area is. Those with high SVIs had lower screening rates, according to a population-based, cross-sectional study by researchers at UTHealth Houston.

Florida Hospitals transfer patients, prep for Hurricane Ian
by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter
-
In the lead up to Hurricane Ian’s arrival, hospitals in Florida evacuated patients to other facilities and called off noncritical procedures in advance of Hurricane Ian.

HCA Florida Pasadena Hospital employed five helicopters to ship about 40 patients to providers outside Pinellas County’s mandatory evacuation zone late Monday, September 26. The health system also moved patients from its facilities in South, West and Central Tampa and suspended services.

Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital halted elective procedures and closed its outpatient centers, as did Tampa General Hospital with its noncritical procedures and urgent care and surgery centers and clinics, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
